How long do orcs live in lord of the rings

I always thought that once the power of Sauron was finally lifted after the destruction of the ring, the orcs of middle earth gradually changed back to their former selves whether they were elves or men.

I would think that orcs live forever under the influence of Sauron until that point. Sign up to join this community. The best answers are voted up and rise to the top. Stack Overflow for Teams — Collaborate and share knowledge with a private group. Create a free Team What is Teams?

Valorum Wouldn't it be better to dupe the other way round? The answer to whether they're immortal no doesn't tell us the answer to how long the live, but the answer to how long they live does tell us whether they're immortal. With the return of Sauron to Dol Guldur and the spread of his evil influence, their numbers began to increase once more. This triggered the War of the Dwarves and Orcs , a massive conflict where the Dwarves gathered their full strength and destroyed every Orc stronghold they could find in the Misty Mountains.

In the meantime Sauron had returned to Mordor, rebuilding his fortress and creating a vast army of Orcs. His thrall Saruman also created the Uruk-hai , a breed of Orc stronger than any seen before. Following the destruction of the One Ring , the Orcs scattered, eventually dwindling and being hunted to extinction in the Fourth Age. Orcs of Mordor as depicted by John Howe. Tolkien 's writings, Orcs were cruel, sadistic, black-hearted, vicious, and hateful of everybody and everything, particularly the orderly and prosperous.

They were generally squat, broad, flat-nosed, sallow-skinned, bow-legged, with wide mouths and slant eyes, long arms, dark skin, and fangs.

Tolkien describes one "huge Orc chieftain" as "almost Man-high", and some must have been close to Hobbit height, as Sam and Frodo were able to disguise themselves as Orcs in Mordor. They were roughly humanoid in shape with pointed ears, sharpened teeth and grimy skin. Their appearance was considered revolting by most of the other races. Orcs made no beautiful things, but many clever ones including machines, tools, weapons, and instruments of torture. They were delighted by wheels, engines, and explosions, and could tunnel and mine as well as any but the most skilled Dwarves, though they are often untidy and dirty.

They hated themselves, and had an even deeper secret hatred for Melkor, thus resulting as a violent and warlike race in a perpetual state of chaos with itself and others. Despite their abominable nature, Orcs were often crafty and clever rather than dim-witted. Tolkien writes that they were capable smiths and craftsmen, though their weapons and belongings are described as crude compared to those of the Free Peoples.

Life-length distribution by race. This graph shows the distribution of character ages for Hobbits, Men and Dwarves. It is important to understand the underlying data and the characteristics of each race. There are very few Dwarves with known age at the time of their death and most of the ones that are known died in battle.

The longest living Dwarf was Dwalin who lived to become years old, 80 years older than the second oldest Dwarf. Hobbits lived a very quiet and uneventful life compared to other races and since they had the habit of drawing their family tree their age distribution is fairly narrow. Men show some interesting characteristics suggesting that there are three different mean ages. One for regular men close to 80 years, one for Nmenoreans and their descendants at about years and finally one for the Nmenoreans of royal blood close to years.

Elros who lived to become years is not included since he is a Half-elf. Show on graph. Middle-earth inhabitants by year. We will never know exactly how the population of Middle-earth changed over time but we can visualize the characters Tolkien choose to describe. This graph shows the known population as it changed over the years. The large spike at the end of the First Age indicate the characters mentioned in the Silmarillion.

After that, most Men with recorded death and birth date are of royal blood. For a better experience, please enable JavaScript in your browser before proceeding. You are using an out of date browser. Are they have similar lifespans to humans? Sailawen New Member. Tolkien Gateway said:.

Elves are not considered full-grown until they are one hundred years old, but by then most Men would be dead. They are also immortal. Click to expand Elthir Active Member. In my opinion Tolkien Gateway at least in the section I read is simplifying the matter of Elven maturity a bit.

Luthien is a notable exception, and died leaving the world and its time. Elves who remain "too long" in Middle-earth will also live until the world ends, but at some point their bodies will "fade" and become invisible to "most" mortal eyes [needs more explaining but moving on for brevity].

Some Elves who "die" in Middle-earth can remain as spirits there. Also, the Elves have various theories about what will happen to them after the world ends.

That's my brief summation anyway. Last edited: Apr 30, Alcuin of Zarkanya. One of the things Tolkien does in his legendarium or mythology is explore various aspects of the humane, of living and dying. Elves are certain aspects of Men and their talents and desires, incarnated in my little world.
