Robert Redford is listed on that site as 5' BTW, the web site is called "celebrity heights. John Wayne at store. Iread in one of his biographies that he was big on gift giving. That is probably why he was getting the perfume. I also read he ordered a lot from catalogs.
Just thought I would add that about his being in the store. I was semi-starstruck, but he used to keep his boat, the Wildgoose, down in the Newport harbor and he had a home there so it was not a real unusual sight, according to the saleslady. John Wayne User Name. Remember Me. Advanced Search. Looked sub in later days imo. I think Deano was around 5'9. I would say 5 ft 7 range was about average for his generation, Sinatra and Bing would have been good examples of average height then I think.
Interesting that the s spawned notably shorter leading man than were being cast some 30 years prior. When you're a kid you think such series' ran for years but many only ran for 1 season or so, we just sat and watched the same season over and over. Seeing him in boat shoes with Marvin he did genuinely look this. He was already a tall, all round, big guy.
Then I came to realize even among the very tall, there is a certain contingent still driven to lift in order to be THE tallest or near enough to. Wayne seems to fit into that category. By all other comparisons, legit 6'4" Woody Strode should've stood taller than Wayne in Liberty Valance. I don't recall one scene in which that was the case and a lot the time Strode appeared a touch shorter. At any rate, there are plenty of other examples of anomalies re Wayne's height.
ChaosControl 6'2. I would not put it past someone like him to understate his weight. I dunno. He loses a bit of credibility from the get go by suggesting Wayne was 6'5"but maybe he's including cowboy boots?. I'd probably take what Wayne wrote on his form, height and weight, over his grandson's claims though his grandson did get the shoe size right.
Not that Wayne's self reported stats on the OSS form are iron clad evidence and of course Wayne could've been understating his true weight and overstating his true height on the form just out of sheer vanity.
There have been claims that the Duke also wore girdles or the like to keep the belly in check. I mean, it is possible that Wayne hit lb for an all time high later in life, so the grandson's claim maybe legit in that respect. He was a big framed man for sure but not so much heavily muscled, as many weren't back in the day.
I misread it then cause I thought it said pounds. Maybe Rob has the facility to set up alerts? Anyway, sounds like you want to get your weight out there so you should welcome a few more opportunities. After all, you did incorrectly attribute a recent weight related quote to me, so there you go. So, hitting refresh, I didn't guess Wayne to be lbs. Rather, I would actually give peak Wayne more like to lbs. By the way, what did you expect me to weight?
No matter, I'm talking peak Wayne, at an age comparable to your own, when he was more svelte and before middle age spread. I also thought you might've been going around a bit heavier than lb. My Dad had big mitts also but he complained that they made it difficult for him to perform the finer tasks, like watch and electronic repairs etc.
Check out boxer Barry McGuigan's page and his fist sized compared to Rob's. His closed fist is a bit closer to camera but there are plenty of testimonies otherwise as to his possessing relatively over sized hands.
Depending on what you're using them for, big hands can either be a great benefit or a major hindrance I guess. Mine are average, a happy medium I would say. I did the maths and my hands are a touch above average at 8. I assume boxing boots are sized the same. Segway: Ever compared your hands to Trumps? I compared my hand and mine were bigger. For his height and size his hands are notably small. Big T never lies. Conversely, the US equivalent for a UK 11 is Everything is bigger and better in the States as they say, even if only by way of alternate units of measure.
TBH, with greater unit divisibility, the more precise the measurement. Re Bette Davis quote on this page. Is the Bette Davis quote re Wayne lifting new or have I just missed it previously? Great quote anyway though perhaps some undertone of an axe to grind and it wouldn't be Bette's first or only.
Anyway, for the sake of argument, let's say Wayne did stand between 6'3. Did he not appear to sometimes stand that bit taller in cowboy boots and possibly sometimes dress shoes? From dress shoe to cowboy boots it seems Wayne gained a small yet discernible increased advantage over actors like Randolph Scott. Not an outrageous lift but enough to put him at a solid 6'4" or even a touch over.
In in equal off screen footwear, there is little to choose between he and Gary Cooper. Also, of the few photos of them available together an older Wayne did not at all look taller than Buddy Ebsen. I'm with a Of course Burt was a circus performer and quite the all round athlete otherwise. Most would compare poorly to him. He was a solid well muscled guy though still several inches shorter and that much lighter than Wayne.
I love talking about the old movies stars. For a 55 yo, particularly for that era, Burt was still in very good shape for that film. Nice memories. Ian C. That's why his physical awkwardness comes as such a surprise. His body "acting" wasn't much to speak of. Perhaps, even, fairly described as awkward and stiff like someone who didn't know where or how to stand, walk or put their hands.
It's claimed that director John Ford helped develop Wayne's later signature walk, gestures and postures. He then had a number of physical "go tos" to support the character. Eccentric yes but I wouldn't call them clumsy, rather, a very unique "swag" of sorts. However these traits came to pass they were certainly memorable and oft imitated.
Ask impressionist Rich Little who has Wayne to thank for a lot of his material. Excellent branding. Wayne worked within his physical limitations and simply maximized what he had. Had he tried to go beyond same he would surely have looked clumsy. Clint was more lithe and athletic but I guess it all boils down to want you want or expect from your western hero. Like, size 9 Too small to adequately support Wayne's bulk, which I would estimate at about pounds when he was in his mids.
Wayne played football for USC when he was young, but got cut. His story is that he had broken his collarbone and therefore couldn't play, but the other story is that he was too slow. Eastwood did not run well, but was otherwise very athletic.
All the more remarkable since he used a Colt army revolver that loaded seven shots. I've frame-by-framed the DVD of the two big gun battles in A Fistful of Dollars, and that pistol had a magic extra chamber.
I was watching him in Hondo the other day, and he lurches when he walks. He was wearing cowboy boots, it is true, but Clint Eastwood, who was just as tall, often did too. Eastwood had a smooth, graceful walk, and seemed quite agile in fight scenes like the one in the poolroom in Coogan's Bluff.
He said in the book Wayne wore lifts. Then I met Picerni at an event. I said "Were you joking about John Wayne wearing lifts? He was an actor and everyone wants to think he was John Wayne in real life". I think it was about 2.
Brendan Wayne thinks he was 6 ft 5, Rock Hudson is laughing from his grave! Obviously a long standing suspicion. I don't think musing the possibility of lifts necessarily defaults to believing Wayne was short. He obviously wasn't and even if a flat 6'3" for example, that would still constitute itself as tall.
Minor lifting and advantage camera angles could make one look that little bit taller again and 6'4" would be easily achievable from an already tall 6'3" or so. As such, it often boils down to a healthy sampling of subjective visual assessments and deductive reasoning. Of course ground and angles can also be more affording to one actor and not the other.
Then again, I guess there are a good number of other actors for whom lifts have been even more strongly assumed without hard visual evidence of lifts necessarily being available. Re Cooper. I heard it was a mental illness. Canadian Iron man George Chuvalo is now experiencing cognitive decline. His son believes it is from boxing. Anyway, excuse my waffle. Sorry about the delay in replying Tall in the saddle. Can't agree in SOIJ he to me appears as tall, hard to get a good shot in fairness.
One where they're fighting might be the best. Gary Cooper was in a movie with a young Tucker and he looked at least as tall. I remember Tucker was beside a dresser in the movie and then Coop shortly afterwards and he easily matched Tucker. Coop was defo over 6'3'' peak but that's for another day. Randy Scott was I would say close to 6'3'', probably less 1' or 2cm under Wayne.
My problem is that there is no photographic evidence to say Wayne ever wore lifts, and if you look at his last public appearance at 79 Oscars he was extremely frail and because was so thin looked very tall. I'd say the 6'3.
Big Frank was a gentle but tormented man but is a lot better now. Having said that, fair call on name calling. My add on was abstract, an extension on the theme and having a bit of fun with it. Anyway, fair examples offered. However, at least IMO, the edge in height see sawed between Stewart and Wayne, including instances in which Stewart wore dress shoes vs Wayne's cowboy boots. In later years, I think Stewart held on to his height better than Wayne. What's your opinion on Randolph Scott's height?
IMO, Scott is being shortchanged and stood at least a solid 6'3". He lost very little height as he got older. In Brannigan 75 with regular shoes was a bit taller than 6'3'' Mel Ferrer. In the shootist towered over Ron Howard 5'8''and he was barefoot. Swing out sweet land in early 70s Wayne in regular shoes appears taller than Dan Blocker amongst others.
Pictured with Jimmy Stewart in the 70s at different events he always looks a bit taller. Less of the name calling as well please. The brainchild of the famous Prof. Richard Helmut who always knew a Bell End whenever he met one. Chaos Control 6'2. You sound a bit punchy. Did you hear a bell ring? Yet, when Ryan acted opposite Wayne, he appeared more or less equal. Affording heels, angles perhaps, just enough for Wayne to equal or eclipse a fellow tall actor? Tucker stood tall into his later years and it would only be Wayne, if anyone, to have suffered any height loss.
Suffice to say though, there are still a number of reasonably justified questions surrounding his exact height. The type of questions you don't read being posed in respect of guys like Vincent Price or Howard Keel whose own claims of a solid 6'4" were upheld in virtually all comparisons. The latter guys you can use as reliable yardsticks when estimating the height of other celebrities standing alongside them.
Probably because of his politics, I've said it before, photos, and video is not good evidence, too many variables that we can't see.
Wayne was listed at 6'4" when he played football. He was a very tall man. Marathon Man don't judge peoples height by their politics. I personally like Wayne as an actor. I like an entertainer for their entertaining abilities, not their politics. People need to stop being influenced by entertainers when it come to politics.
Look at all the issues, and make up your mind. The world will be better for it. I can't find the photo to post, however. Wayne had at least 5 inches on him and Wayne was around 68 at the time The Shootist was Here is an unrelated photo of Wayne and his wife Pilar: Click Here Now I don't know how tall Pilar was at the time, but if Wayne were standing straight in this photo, I can see a inches of difference.
You can see it when Wayne and Hudson stood next to each other - Hudson seemed 3 inches taller. Wayne, 6'4'' at his peak? Stop the nonsense. Judging from what I've seen he might have been 6'2. Both clearly tall but specifically how tall? Wayne is that bit more problematic given the popular suggestion that he wore lifts. So, even when the Duke appears to be standing a good 6'4", one might still wonder if it is due to enhancing footwear. I guess if one genuinely stands 6'4" there shouldn't be too many instances, if any at all, to suggest they perhaps stood less than same.
Wayne was about 35 yo so full peak assumed. Here's the trailer for the movie and I think there's sufficient vision to indicate that, overall, Carroll clearly edged Wayne. Lins 5' He's wearing a cowboy costume in the picture too, which suggests that he was wearing cowboy boots.
I am certain that Max Baer Jr. So Wayne might have been as low as six foot two in the early sixties. The shoulders on Baer Snr are unreal. It seems that the conventional approach was an angled incision going from the front, underneath the middle of the chest around to the back. In Wayne's case, it was reported that the tumor was of such size that it was more suitable for them to cut through the back only, thus no scarring visible in the said photo.
Wayne looks not taller. There is a photo with Gary Cooper, both with flat sandals - I think Cooper looks a little bit taller and another photo shows him with Gregory Peck, in a movie-pause.
But this is my opinion and you can make look people taller and smaller with camera-sights. Photos are often lying. When a lung is removed, he surgeons go in through the back. You can't go in through the front because the heart and all the vessels leading to and away from it are in the way. When a lung is removed, the patient loses a few ribs in the operation. So my little theory that Wayne exaggerated the severity of his condition was kinda dumb.
Sometimes I exhibit more imagination than is strictly congruent with objective reality, and this has been one of those times. There is a picture of John Wayne, ostensibly taken in , standing with his shirt off on the set of the movie The Undefeated.
Wayne was said to have had a cancerous lung and several ribs surgically removed in In the shirtless picture, there are no scars on his bare chest. How could that be? Possible explanations: The photo is a fake. Except that it looks pretty real, and Wayne's body in it looks pretty much like you would have expected it to look after seeing him with his shirt on.
Or, when the lung and ribs were removed, the surgeons took them out through an incision in Wayne's back. That would seem unlikely, as they'd have had to cut through a lot more flesh, and would have destroyed muscles Wayne would have needed to use his arms. Also, I've never heard of anyone getting heart surgery except through the front of the chest, so no one would get lung surgery except through the front. Or maybe Wayne's story about the lung removal was fiction.
Wayne made one movie in Circus World, which was a flop , and three in If he really did have a lung removed, he had remarkable powers of recuperation for a man in his early 60s. So I suspect that the lung cancer surgery story was a fake. He was same height than Lee Marvin Just watch the movie: the man who shot liberty valance Was Wayne simply surrounded by a lot of tall fellow actors back in the day OR did he lift a bit when his star began to rise?
As I've noted before, in dress shoes, Wayne barely rocked any advantage over Randolph Scott but in westerns, though both in cowboy boots, Wayne appeared to grow that bit taller, suggesting not all cowboy boots are equal, particularly if you're the star. Wayne oddly looked no more than 6'2. But later on in terms of body frame he really had the frame of a guy around 6'4. I do think he often wore lifts in his cowboy boots to accentuate his height further, he could make Dean Martin look Rob's height at times!
His boots did have that "Stuffed" look about them when he walked in a lot of those westerns, I don't think his "walk" was a cooincidence. Years ago, several websites listed Wayne's height as 6'5" and he looked all of 6'5" on screen in various roles.
Now, many sites have him listed at 6'3. BUT, Wayne's old early 30's films really do raise some questions. He simply does not appear to stand as tall as he did later in his career, when fame truly came his way.
The "walk" he developed curiously manifested later also and, even if by coincidence, it did appear to reflect someone walking in excessive heels. Wayne's height advantage appeared most prominent when in cowboy garb, all important boots included. In non western films, in dress shoes, Wayne appeared to lose that "edge" in height. Certainly, as compared to the same actor viz Randolph Scott in both western and non western roles, Wayne's advantage notably decreased when he moved from cowboy boots to dress shoes.
Informally, off set, Wayne did not stand as tall as one would've guessed from his apparent stature on screen. And then there are all the comments by fellow celebs re: lifts to be getting on with The ground is slightly uneven, but Woods and Wayne look similar in height.
Click Here There are several 6'1 actors in this movie that look almost as tall as Wayne. Then as his stardom grew I generally wear flat chucks Chuck Taylor canvas sneakers to not draw attention to myself. My wife bought me some dress boots which add at least 1. Rock Hudson seemed to have about an inch on Wayne in The Undefeated. Maybe he shrank from his army listed 6ft 3. A big-framed 6'3 could look 6'5 to the casual observer.
We have estimated John Wayne's net worth, money, salary, income, and assets. The first-day ceremonies were held at Grauman's Chinese Theatre in Hollywood. His spoken album "America: Why I Love Her" became a surprise best-seller and Grammy nominee when it was released in Reissued on CD in the aftermath of the terrorist attacks of September 11, , it became a best-seller all over again. His grave finally received a plaque in October Posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian award, by President Jimmy Carter in In , after recovering from open heart surgery, he had a script commissioned for a film called "Beau John" in which he would star with Ron Howard, but due to his declining health it never happened.
Maureen O'Hara presented him with the People's Choice Award for most popular motion picture actor in During the filming of The Undefeated , he fell from his horse and fractured three ribs. He couldn't work for almost two weeks.
Then he tore a ligament in his shoulder and couldn't use one arm at all. The director, Andrew V. McLaglen, could only film him from an angle for the rest of the picture. His only concern throughout was not to disappoint his fans, despite being in terrible pain. His patriotic stand was enshrined in The Green Berets which he co-directed and starred in. Over the years Wayne was beset with health problems. The part was eventually given to Lee Marvin.
He also felt that the film portrayed the military in a bad light. In September he had a cancerous left lung removed; in March there was heart valve replacement surgery; and in January his stomach was removed.
He once made a cameo appearance on The Beverly Hillbillies And when asked how he wanted to be paid, his answer, in return, was "Give me a fifth of bourbon - that'll square it. His conservative political stance was also reflected in The Alamo , which he produced, directed and starred in.
