Pigeon paramyxovirus-1 belongs to a larger group of avian paramyxovirus serogroup 1 APMV-1 viruses. Though PPMV-1 has never been documented to infect humans, some strains of viruses in the APMV-1 group have been shown to cause mild conjunctivitis in people who directly handled large numbers of infected birds. There are no records of transmission of PPMV-1 to other mammals, such as domestic pets.

Some strains of PPMV-1 have been shown to be virulent in poultry. Minimizing contact between doves and poultry in affected areas of West Texas is advised until the PPMV-1 dove mortality event is over.
