It was nice to have it back. I'm still sick of Anita's magical vagina and how she collects a new man or two every book now though. It's gotten to the point where the original men are all but forgotten. Jean-Claude doesn't even have a phone call with her in this book, which I think is all he got in Skin Trade. I miss the vampires, there isn't a single appearance of one in this novella but it seems like maybe the were politics could be over finally.
I think they might be now, but I'm not sure. She could collect another strain of lycanthropy though and start the process of finding a mate for it all over again.
I'm hoping Hamilton doesn't follow that path though because it's gotten old. I'm wondering if I liked this book because it was more stream-lined. Like I said before, it's very short, and I'm worried that Bullet , at twice the length, is going to be a bloated mess. I'm flirting with hope though. And I'm scared of the power of hoping, because to flirt with that power IS to hope.
And there's power in that. Because hoping IS power. And flirting is power. I hope I have the power to hope there's hope for Anita. I smile and flirt at the idea. Because she needs the power of hoping more than any of us. Why did I do this to myself? Why return to Anita Blake, when all she does is annoy and frustrate me?
Because I am a fool. But as foolish as I am, at least I didn't write a novel in which all the male characters tell Anita how hot and desirable and wonderful she is for an entire chapter. Is there a plot? Sure, but it's solved in about two minutes. And then has sex with him? And then all her boyfriends comfort her about how hard it must have been on her? Including their own family members? This series better end with someone chopping her head off, because at this point Anita Blake is actively evil.
The Flooze. Good morning, boys and girls! Gather round Miss Michelle now. That's right. Amelia, stop poking Mel. It's not nice. Today, we're going to do a little lesson in writing style.
I want you all to look at the following passage and tell me: What bothers you most about it? The boy came in with a book. I couldn't see the cover of the book. He always had a book with him, so it didn't surprise me he had a book. I asked him, "Why do you always have a book? The correct answer is the heavy repetition of a single word throughout the passage hinders flow, deprives the text of all consequence, and makes the dialogue read like the inane chatter of two dimwitted parrots.
End of lesson. On to the plot. Flirt brings Anita back to her necromancy, but complicates matters by throwing the animator's lioness into the mix. The majority of the story felt very familiar. I'd have to look through earlier installments to confirm, but even the defeat of the big bad came off as a rehash.
This wasn't helped by lengthy recaps that created awkward interruptions and clunky transitions. Too much focus on Anita's thought process hindered the action until late in the game. It's a pattern established in the last two books; if you were irked by those, you'll probably feel the same here. By the end, the few developments made were not enough to justify the novella's existence. I paid 12 bucks for it. I did not get my money's worth.
The Afterword. LKH decided to trace this story from its inception to give fans an insight into her process. To this end, Flirt includes an afterword addressing where she gets her ideas and how she transfers them from mind to paper.
It's casual in tone, forthright, and interesting. It's thoughtful. She describes a real-life incident that very closely mirrors a scene in the book. But the non-fiction version is so much better. It has a vibrancy and natural appeal that's utterly lacking in the Anita-verse rendition. In other words, it shows that LKH possesses talent and has an easy way with language.
It reminded me of why I once enjoyed her writing, and why I'm now so irritated by the sloppy, repetitive mess it's become. I'd like to say I'm ready to wash my hands of Anita Blake.
I'd like to put my foot down and say No. She's a US marshal who can raise zombies with the best of them. Vampire hunter Anita Blake is called on to raise the dead - while trying to suppress her ever-growing feelings for a certain wereleopard. In the thralls of supernatural passion, Anita Blake faces a most human dilemma. A favor for a friend puts Anita Blake in the center of a full-blown scandal that threatens master vampire Jean-Claude's reign - and makes her a pawn in an ancient vampire queen's new rise to power.
Anita has never seen Damian, her vampire servant, in such a state. The rising sun doesn't usher in the peaceful death that he desperately needs.
Instead, he's being bombarded with violent nightmares and blood sweats. And now, with Damian at his most vulnerable, Anita needs him the most. The vampire who created him, who subjected him to centuries of torture, might be losing control, allowing rogue vampires to run wild and break one of their kind's few strict taboos.
For most people, summer barbecues are nothing to be afraid of. But Anita isn't exactly plain vanilla - and neither is her love life. So it takes a special kind of courage to attend a barbecue thrown by her friend Sergeant Zerbrowski. Anita attends the wedding of her close friend but finds that even on the happiest of days there are wounds that need healing. She and the wereleopards Micah and Nathaniel are asked to talk to the bride's year-old brother, Tomas, who is struggling to recover from a recent gunshot wound.
Depressed and demoralized, Tomas isn't doing his physical therapy and could spend the rest of his life in a wheelchair Vampire hunter Anita Blake finds her life is more complicated than ever, caught as she is between her obligations to the living - and the undead. Once a sworn enemy of all monsters, Anita is now the human consort of both Jean-Claude, the master vampire, and Micah, the leopard shape-shifter.
Not quite as human as she once was, she is consumed by both their hungers - desires that must be sated time and time again. When a centuries-old vampire targets Jean-Claude and his clan, Anita finds herself tested as never before - needing all the dark forces her passion can muster to save the ones she loves the most Vampire hunter Anita Blake has managed to overcome everything she faces.
But this time there's a monster that even she doesn't know how to fight A remote Florida island is the perfect wedding destination for the upcoming nuptials of Anita's fellow US marshal and best friend, Edward.
For Anita, the vacation is a welcome break, as it's the first trip she gets to take with wereleopards Micah and Nathaniel. But it's not all fun and games and bachelor parties There are a lot of monsters in Anita Blake's life. And some of them are human. One such individual is the man she calls Edward, a bounty hunter who specializes in the preternatural. He calls her to help him hunt down the greatest evil she has ever encountered - something that kills and maims and vanishes into the night.
Something Anita will have to face alone. The Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter backlist lights up the night. In her eighth adventure, Anita Blake can't turn her back on a former lover during the full moon. Especially since he's behind bars - and he's a werewolf. Was too short I was never so disappointed.
I want my credit back!!! Reads more like a subplot in one of her usual works. Is there anything you would change about this book? Make it longer. This book should have been combined with another book in the series.
It had an odd storyline - Flirting - and I still don't understand why the story revolved around how every in it flirted. I had a hard time determining which was the main plot story and which were the sub plot stories - they all mingled and felt rushed. Nothing adds to the overall story either. Would you recommend Flirt to your friends?
Why or why not? No, of all the books in the series, this is one that can be skipped with no impact. How does this one compare? Yes, all the other Anita books she narrates. Great as always.
Any additional comments? I am sad that audiobook charges full price for this short book. Also, who has the time. Maybe it's me, but if you feel more comfortable in a cardigan, wear a fucking cardigan. I don't think that's particularly supportive.
I've also come to the realisation that if the book has, I don't know, a hundred sex scenes and everyone has multiple orgasms every single time, I tend to tap out.
It irritates me. Not because I'm a prude, but because at some point, these sex scenes start being fillers more than anything. Naya may have failed at flirting, but so did this book. I hated how Naya was written as flawed, but not really flawed.
Kind of like the people whose answer to "what's your biggest fault" is "oh, I don't know. That I work too hard, maybe". It just really grated on me. On the other hand, Jake had literally no flaws.
He was an angel on earth, put to rescue and protect Naya. I can't fucking stand that. I get that books, especially in this genre are supposed to be unrealistic, but in this case the other part of the storyline view spoiler [sexual assault hide spoiler ] kind of defeats that purpose. Which actually makes me more mad. I just wanted Jake to make ONE mistake.
Be normal for ONE minute. I also think that the book should come with a trigger-warning view spoiler [for rape and abuse hide spoiler ] , mostly because the blurb reads like a happy-go-lucky romance, and the book especially the last quarter of the book was anything but.
Not that I have a problem with difficult themes or conversations, but if I wanted to read a book about difficult themes and conversations, I would read a book about difficult themes and conversations. I don't like being cheated. Knowing me, I usually forgive bad stories if the writing is excellent. But alas, the writing was mediocre here, at best.
That didn't help. I entirely understand the purpose of chick lit and it's why I read it - it's supposed to be unrealistic and tropey and ridiculous. But it can be all that, and still be good. This was decidedly not. View all 15 comments. Feb 18, Brandice rated it it was amazing. I loved How to Fail at Flirting! After a terrible relationship, Naya like papaya Turner has buried herself in work, avoiding dating and frequent social interactions.
There are rumors of forthcoming cuts for her department at the university where she teaches. While out, Naya meets Jake, a handsome stranger in town for a wedding. He buys her a drink and they hit it off. Naya has successfully complet I loved How to Fail at Flirting! Naya has successfully completed a fun, no-strings-attached outing. Or so she thinks Naya and Jake grow close and build a relationship but she stays a bit guarded and reserved, remembering awful parts of her last relationship.
They also realize their careers have some unexpected overlap, another factor that makes Naya cautious. Though a bit predictable at times, I appreciated that How to Fail at Flirting also had some depth, delving into the serious topic of abusive relationships, as well as the often relatable topic of balancing work and personal life.
I finished reading the physical book but the audio narration was excellent. How to Fail at Flirting was great, so glad I read this one! View all 17 comments. Nov 04, Lacey laceybooklovers rated it really liked it Shelves: contemporary-romance , author-of-color , adult , listened-to-audio , review-copy. I can't believe I haven't read this sooner! This was a fantastic debut — I loved the writing, and both the characters and story were solid.
This is very much NOT a rom-com though, as it deals with heavy subjects like abuse, domestic violence, gaslighting, and assault.
Naya has been recovering from her previous relationship and wants to move forward in her life. She makes a list of things to do in order to reclaim herself and while at a bar, she meets Jake. He happens to see her list and offers to I can't believe I haven't read this sooner!
He happens to see her list and offers to help her complete it. I loved these two together! They were so sweet and I felt the connection between them from the very beginning.
The romance is slow but heartwarming. I'm really glad I finally read Denise Williams and can't wait to read more from her. My romantic life summed up in a book title challenge: Done. There are some serious themes that warrant a trigger warning like domestic violence and and emotional abuse. I didn't see that in the book's blurb so here's a heads up for those who need them. I loved Jake and Naya's connection although it was pretty instant.
Their cheesy jokes and sweet togetherness was fun but I do think it lacked a little depth. The author focuses a lot on their physical attraction that was definitely on the sexier side. There was a good amount of steam but I think it could have been a little less bedroom scenes and a little more emotional bonding. Still, these two were cute together and it was easy to love and root for them.
Here is something that I'm not happy to mention because I don't pretend to know how an abuse victim feels like and how they should react. This highly intelligent woman was scared yet she didn't talk to anyone about it.
I get the guilt and shame and like I said, I don't know how realistic this would be but it did feel wrong that she waited for it to escalate. I enjoyed this story immensely, I laughed, there was suspense in the last couple of chapters that had me on the edge of my seat and I felt for both Jake and Naya when their relationship was tested. I loved seeing Naya find her power and stand up for herself. I wanted to be kissed like that again, like I was something special, something wanted, like I was … someone.
I adored Jake, who was simply a decent man who wanted to be there for Naya. The writing is very crisp and engaging, I easily connected with this author's style and I'm definitely going to read more stories by Denise Williams! No, this is something special.
It was the special I had no idea how to handle. Nov 24, Stacee rated it liked it Shelves: netgalley , contains-the-evil-sentence , read-in , title-in-the-story. Well, this is another case of the cute cover and synopsis not showing exactly what this book is about.
Be warned: it is not just the sweet rom-com it appears to be I really liked Naya and Jake. There are a good amount of characters here, but this is definitely a story of Naya, her growth, and how Jake fits in it.
Plot wise, it was mostly good. Th Well, this is another case of the cute cover and synopsis not showing exactly what this book is about. The relationship progressed organically and the time jumps were well noted. I would have liked a bit more conversation.
Of course, it does make sense why Naya keeps things quiet, but sometimes it seemed liked their talks were really superficial. Overall, it was a story I liked with characters who were easy to root for. My main downfall with this book is that I expected something a bit different from what I got.
So I just finished THE book. One good thing in ! Yes, THE book, because unbeknownst to the author this feel good romance felt like it was written just for me! I love my meet cutes in romance and well, if you start off by hooking up with a stranger at a bar because your type A personality demands you check off items on that To Do list burning a hole in your comfiest cardigan's pocket Let's do this, Naya! But in all seriousness, this book had me smiling all throughout, I didn't want to stop reading but at the same time I tried so damn hard to pace my reading because I didn't want it to end!
The author made it so easy to fall in love with her characters, Naya and Jake. They're both so complex and real, you just want to make them your own.
The care given to the character's development was remarkable with fully rounded mentions of past relationships, upbringing, work, co-workers, friends. Watching Jake and Naya attempts at seducing each other was endearingly adorable and I was here for all the awkward little moments.
The chemistry on page kept me engaged and fueled my romance reader heart. I'm not going to lie, the author had me wishing with anticipation for the smallest touch, brush of fingers, flex of hands I could even feel the way Jake was staring at the heroine, I was this much invested in their unfolding relationship.
I absolutely adored the dialogues, so engaging! This was a really happy place read for me even though it deals with heavier themes like past emotional and physical abuse, digital harrasment, which made for a really emotionally balanced story in the end, bringing just enough conflict to keep their unfolding romance captivating without dipping into silly drama.
The cast of supporting characters was diverse too, I adored both Jake and Naya's friends, they made them shine even more. Naya was an amazing leading character and I absolutely adored her but seriously we need to talk about Jake and probably make a list of all the things we loved about him.
Alright, maybe another time! I didn't mean to write such a long review, and I must apologize because the book doesn't actually come out before December , but I'll be sure to remind you to pick this amazing romance in a few months! Big ew on this one. It was skating by at 3 stars until the ending, where our hero did not even sort of come through for our heroine when she was clearly being demeaned and eventually assaulted by her abusive ex.
Fresh, sexy and romantic. Although I did have to overlook some of the more cheesy moments. The beginning of the book was pure romance, sexy, sizzling even, and sweet.
